Three Ways To Accelerate Musical Progress

If you find that you’re not progressing as fast as you’d like with your music, it may help to examine your learning style.

Are you a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner? There are many questionnaires available online that will help you determine your style, and get you thinking about how you might approach learning or writing music from a different angle.

If you are a visual learner, you may be good at reading notation and have the ability to ‘see’ pages of music in your mind’s eye. If you’re an auditory learner, you may be able to learn songs by listening to recordings. If you’re a kinesthetic learner, your fingers may be able to remember where to go on the keyboard, fretboard, etc. from physical feel. Most people utilize a combination of all three styles, but have a preference for a particular one.

When you understand & engage your primary learning style, you can

—Increase focus

—Strengthen your creative output

—Move your skill level forward faster

A straightforward learning styles questionnaire can be found at http://www.lkdsb.net/program/elementary/intermediate/di/files/stu2.pdf

You only need to look at the first two pages to open up a new world of understanding.

  1. I must be mostly Kinesthetic. I learn by reading the notes, but would never be able to remember them. When I learn a piece I forget the notes and play it mainly by feel (and a little by ear) up to where I left off learning and then start reading notes again from there until I have the piece learned which can take a very long time depending upon how much time I put in.

    • Hi Matt,
      Sounds like it. Did you take the quiz? That would give you a better idea, though not definitive.

      • I just did it.

        Visual =21
        Auditory = 18
        Kinesthetic = 20

        I guess I’m more visual than I thought. Now I’m just wondering how knowing this can help me in music.

  2. GREAT post, Debra, and helpful for all of us — it’s nice to check in and have my suspicions about my learning style(s) confirmed.

    Me, in order:

    kinesthetic >21

    visual >21

    auditory <21

    • Your learning styles are in perfect balance! How the heck do you manage being such a renaissance man?!
